Wow, what an enjoyable read.
Once I was visiting the home of a young family with two kids. One of the kids was a nine year old boy. I went into their kitchen and saw the boy sitting at the kitchen table with a peeled white onion in his hand. He was eating it just like an apple.
I stared intently at the boy, watching him take bites out of the onion, then I looked at his mom who was standing by the kitchen sink.
She shrugged her shoulders, “He does that. He loves onions. I can never buy enough onions at the store.
I looked back at the boy then back at her, “He must be an Aries.”
Her eyes widened and her mouth opened in surprise, “Yes. Yes, he is. How did you know that?”
“Because I’m an Aries. Onions and garlic are the official state flower of the sign of Aries. I used to love to eat raw onions when I was a kid — and still do, although now I prefer them sauteed.”
(“Official state flower” is not the correct term but I think you know what I mean.)
So anyway, as I read your marvelous story I couldn’t help but wonder if you are an Aries, Christiana White . And I also wondered if your Persian man is a Cancer. They don’t care for onions and garlic much.
My mother was a Cancer and she refused to allow garlic in her home. She thought it was evil. Thank goodness she did use onions in her cooking, although very sparingly so. And thank goodness she occasionally let me eat raw onions. Once I left home I discovered garlic and I began eating massive amounts of onions and garlic every day. (My mother also would not allow anyone in her kitchen when she was cooking. The only time we were allowed in the kitchen was after the meal to wash and dry the dishes.)
And then I married a Cancer woman. Occasionally she complained that I used too much onion and garlic in my cooking — even though I used less than I normally would have because of her. (I came to saute extra onions on the side to put only on my plate.)
Nowadays I cook only for myself and I am one happy cook. I include onions and garlic in almost everything. I panic if I run out of onions or garlic (or jalapenos). They are the very most important ingredients in my kitchen.
