When the white people from Europe came to Turtle Island and committed genocide against the Native Turtle Islanders one of their weapons of choice was alcohol. Most Native Turtle Islanders had no experience with alcohol and their actions under its influence were very self-defeating. But there was one tribe of Native Turtle Islanders who did have experience with alcohol. They had been drinking it for hundreds of years. I refer to the Apaches of Arizona and New Mexico. They had been making alcohol from desert plants (like agave) for centuries. They weren’t daily drinkers. They used it for religious sacrament. Curiously, they were the very last tribe to finally succumb to white tyranny. I may be making this up but I think it was because the white man introduced them to Chardonnay.
