The last time I had a haircut was the first week of October, 1986. It was just a few days before my daughter was born. I made a Lakota Love Pledge to the Creator that I would never cut my hair again (or allow metal to touch my hair) as long as my daughter was alive. If you ever see me with a buzzed head you can safely surmise that my daughter has died. I hope to never cut my hair again as long as I live.

After going over 31 years without a haircut you would think that my hair is down to the backs of my ankles but it is not. It is only down to the middle of my back which is how long it’s been for around 29 years. Hair has a way of maintaining its own desired length. Our head hair, after all, is a vital organ of our body. It connects our psychic abilities with our nervous system. To cut it is to desecrate our own bodies. Those in the Western World have been conditioned to believe that hair is all about fashion and a statement of our egos. And therefore we cut off one of our own bodily functions. It is self-desecration in the most intense way. It is even worse than getting a tattoo. But most of us tend to do whatever social convention dictates we do.

Don’t miss my short story, Cold Turkey.
