The Big Change

It’s coming

--

Right now the cicadas, the crickets and the birds are having a contest to see who can be the loudest. Currently atop the leader board are the cicadas, followed by the crickets and then the birds. But the sun set just a short while ago so that will surely change.

Cicadas are day dwellers. When the sun sets their music-making mojo begins to dwindle. The crickets get a little louder and the birds begin their evening virtuoso to take over the lead position.

But it doesn’t last for too long. By midnight the cicadas are no where to be heard, the birds are tucking each other in bed for the night and only a handful of wayward and possibly drunken crickets are still making music with their legs in hope of getting laid before the evening is over.

Then there are the fireflies. They are eerily silent but they put on a dazzling light show. But even they seem to run out of juice around midnight.

So what happens after midnight? I don’t really know because I am almost always asleep by then. I leave one concert for another and usually the bugs and birds don’t follow me. I wonder what I’m missing.

Thankfully, the bugs and birds are back in the morning. It’s like non-stop concert-going.

But it is September and it won’t be long before silence descends upon our world. Snow flakes are simply far too quiet.
