Thanks for the response, Shari M . I respectfully disagree with you. If readers want to show their appreciation of what they read then they can leave a response saying so rather than marking up the work, which I consider to be rude and offensive and which negatively affects the reading experience for other readers. I do have to admit, though, that for non-fiction articles highlighting can be beneficial but for a work of fiction or poetry it is just plain rude and counter-productive to mark up the work with highlight/graffiti. If someone truly resonates and respects a work of art they will not mark all over it. When a reader is respectful and shares in a comment how they were moved by an artistic work of fiction or poetry then I’ll pop the champagne. But when readers initiate flaming highlight attacks on an artistic work of fiction or poetry then that only shows a complete lack of respect on the part of the reader.
