Thanks for sharing your perspectives, Gutbloom My experiences have been different, especially in regard to those “collections” at the top of the page. When I check them out they just seem like a rehashing of what’s in my “For you” feed — only separated into vague categories. No matter which feed or collection I peruse it’s mostly the same stuff. The “editor’s pick” feed seems very narrowly focused.
But I check those collections usually because I don’t have much time. It takes a lot of time and a lot of digging to find the good stuff on Medium. That digging can be very tiresome and infuriating. So I check the feeds and collections and I am most always disappointed and rarely find an article I am excited to click on.
My “For You” feed is slightly better than the rest but only because I follow some great writers and I like that sometimes their posts show up in my “For You” feed (but not always). Sadly, everything they recommend also shows up in my feed and 98% of that I am not interested in.
Medium’s system is intensely infuriating. They have done a few things to make it slightly better and I applaud that. But it has a long way to go to make me happy.
The most exasperating thing about the “For You” feed is that I can check it at 8 in the morning and then check it again at 3 in the afternoon and it’s almost identical to what it was at 8 in the morning except for maybe 3 or 4 new articles. 7 hours of Medium and there are only 3 or 4 new articles? If the “For You” feed was the only thing I ever checked I would have to come to the conclusion that Medium is very dead with very, very few people posting articles and stories. The feeds are not updated often enough — it seems only once or twice a day. We need a real-time feed showing things as they are being posted. Instead we only get one half of one percent of what’s being posted. Instead we have to wait several hours for Medium to get around to updating feeds in order to see something new.
It’s tiresome. But that’s the way it is so I throw up my hands.
