Virgins become obsessed with losing their virginity. I certainly did so many, many, many decades ago. When I finally did I felt kind of cheap the next day. I thought, Seriously? That’s what I was pining for for so long? It was not even remotely as earth-shattering as I thought it would. Now what the hell do I look forward to?

It’s the same with Medium. I must admit that I’m not a virgin. I’ve been curated. When it first happened I was extremely excited but the next morning I thought, Seriously? That’s what I was pining for for so long? An extra dollar, maybe an extra buck-fifty? A dozen extra views and maybe five extra people clapping?

The best thing about being curated is that you no longer have to think about it any longer. You no longer have to waste any energy pining for it any more. Sure, you feel better no longer being a virgin but in the end it was just a cheap one-night stand. It is not a meaningful relationship you can plan your future around. And thankfully there are no kids.

Don’t ever write for Medium’s young curating staff. They’ll slip out in the middle of the night without so much as a how-do-you-do. Don’t even write for your followers. Don’t even write for yourself. Write for the story that is coming though you. That’s what really matters. It’s the only thing that matters.

Oh, and don’t quit your day job.
