There is great comfort and safety in doing things the way we have always done them. We are creatures of habit and routine — both individually and collectively. The notion of change brings up fear.

Do you take the exact same route to work that you’ve been taking every single freaking day for the last seventeen years? Do you eat the very same food for breakfast every single day? Do you go to bed at the same time every evening? Do you utilize the very same sexual position every time you engage in coitus? Do you use the very same words to describe your intimate relationships? When you put on shoes do you always put on one shoe (left or right) first?

When we slip into habitual routine we don’t have to utilize much cognitive reasoning, do we? Or imagination. We can do things without even being aware of what we’re doing. We then have more time to replay the routine thinking patterns that loop endlessly in our noggins.

How often do we think new thoughts?

How often do we feel new feelings?

How often do we step out of our ruts to shake things up? How often do we walk through our fears to see what is on the other side?
