It’s Halloween and It’s Snowing
And that is perfectly normal (apparently)
I rarely check official weather forecasts. I usually just look out the window. So I was a bit surprised this morning when I looked out the window and saw that it was snowing.
But there really is no reason for me to be surprised. When I first moved here to the Great Plains of Turtle Island seven years ago every local I talked to told me that the first snow of the season ALWAYS falls on or very near Halloween. I wasn’t alarmed and I really gave it little thought. After all, before moving here I lived high up in the mountains of Colorado where the first snow usually occurs in August. The end of October? That’s really late.
Sure enough, it has snowed four times on Halloween in the seven years I’ve been here. And the other three years the first snow occurred within two days either side of Halloween. The locals were dead on accurate.
Snow on Halloween is perfectly normal around here. It is not a sign of climate change. It is not unusual in any way. It is fully expected. While people elsewhere put out jack-o-lanterns for Halloween we get out our snow shovels.
And by the way, the snow is coming down quite heavily. We’ve already got about an inch on the ground. If it continues like this for very long there are going to be a lot of small children eagerly awaiting trick-or-treat time who will be pissed off.
I wonder if it would be okay to hand out mugs of hot cocoa to trick-or-treaters.
From the warmth of my office I look out my window at the falling snow and I am both happy and sad. I am sad that the warm, sunny, colorful time of year is over and that the cold, dark and snowy time of year has begun. But I am happy because snow is such a delightful, hypnotizing thing to look at. Watching rain is never quite as exciting as watching snow. I think I’ll try to focus on the beauty.
To all those trick-or-treaters I say, When life hands you snow make a snowman. Or, to be more appropriate for today, make a snow jack-o-lantern or a snow witch or a snow ghost or a snow goblin.
And there you have it; an article about nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever.
