I think Mark Starlin is being generous when calling the average Medium attention span around 7 minutes. I think it may now be more like 4 minutes. I sure enjoyed reading his serialized novel on Medium. It was exciting because it almost felt like I was reading it as he was writing it. I find that truly exciting even if very, very few other people do. And I am thoroughly hooked on Starkey's American Rainbow.
Ever since I joined Medium in 2015 I have always thought that Medium was ripe for novel serialization. Writers actually attempted it way back then but then the process seemed to fade away as the average reading attention span kept getting shorter and shorter and shorter.
A few years back I actually serialized an entire one of my shorter novels here on Medium and it was almost entirely ignored. It produced worse numbers than anything I've ever published here. I couldn't even pay anyone to read it.
I had planned on serializing another of my shorter novels but I abandoned that idea after the horrifically dismal showing of my first attempt at full serializing. I still think about doing it but it won't work here since it is already published (in both ebook & paperback).
And I don't have anything unpublished that I could submit here so I would have to start something from scratch and I'm not sure my muse is up to that. I certainly look forward to what other Grab-a-Slicers might put forward. As for Mark Kelly's novel, I certainly intend to read that although it may take a few installments. I wish Medium had a feature for bookmarks within stories.
I think it would be cool to have a home for novels on Medium & I couldn't imagine a better place than Grab-a-Slice. Sometimes you want more than just a slice. Sometimes you want a whole pizza.
