I think at least 90% of Medium writers are currently in jail. I certainly am. I have noticed an exodus beginning. Writers are leaving. Readers, too. How many mainstream formulaic self-help articles can you read before you’re bored? And mainstream formulaic self-help articles are the only writing that is given visibility on Medium. The situation for Medium writers is growing worse with each passing week. Sadly, Ev Williams is smiling because this is exactly what he wants. Nothing would make him happier than if there was not a single piece of fiction on the entire platform. Or spiritual writing. His goal has always been to turn Medium into the world’s largest repository of mainstream formulaic self-help articles geared towards twenty-somethings.

We must continue to demand change even though it is unlikely to happen. Ev Williams is getting exactly what he wants so why would he listen to 90% of the writers on his platform who feel they are getting screwed? We can complain all day and nothing is going to happen. WE NEED TO TAKE COLLECTIVE ACTION!

Let’s get some petitions going. Let’s bombard Medium with emails. Let’s pick a day where everyone boycotts Medium. No writing, no reading. Maybe then Medium will take notice and work on trying to bring some equity back to the platform.

It is obvious that Ev Williams’ thinking is of the antiquated Darwinian model of survival of the meanest, where all the rewards go to the top 2% and everyone else gets screwed. That’s the American system of business and it does not foster true growth (except for the 2%). The new thinking that is starting to take over the world is one of cooperation instead of competition, community instead of separation and class warfare, and mutual growth instead of lopsided growth. But Medium is modeled on that archaic Darwinian thinking. It would do Ev Williams some good to learn about the new thinking taking hold with humankind instead of just holding fast to old systems that no longer work.
