In several Native American cultures people never had the same name for their entire lives. They had one name during their childhood then a new name for their early adulthood and then another for their mature adulthood. This makes so much sense to me. After all, everyone changes through the course of their lives. Western society frowns on this and insists on only one name for an entire lifetime (unless, of course, you’re a woman who gets married, taking her husband’s name — a practice I consider repulsively misogynistic). I think we all should change our names during our lives to reflect the new persons we become.
