Member-only story
Geronimo
The poem
They said he had the mojo
no bullet could touch him
a gift from the Mountain Spirits
that watched over the land
His wives and children
were brutally murdered
so he went to war
against Mexico and America
For years he was chased
and always got away
and he survived
fearlessly walking through strafing gunfire
He was not a chief
but a medicine man
He was the last Indian leader
to finally surrender
In his youth he was
an unparalleled master horseman
He died a prisoner at 85
after falling off a horse
He was taken from his homeland
to which he never returned
His grave is not in his desert mountains
but in Oklahoma instead
They say he had the mojo
His name was Goyahkla
But the Mexicans and Americans
called him Geronimo
