Ev Williams , I loved your article. Fantastic and right on!

But I want to throw in one small point. You delineated the differences between entertainment and information. Personally, I think there is room for both on Medium. People are willing to pay for and eager to read quality short fiction for entertainment. But Medium’s intense focus is on information while fiction writing that is entertaining is kept in the shadows.

When a reader comes to Medium for the very first time there is absolutely no way for them to know that any fiction even exists on Medium. I know differently. I’ve been on Medium for almost 3 years and I know that there is a tremendous amount of quality fiction here. But only a tiny, tiny, tiny percentage of that entertaining quality fiction is ever granted visibility by the young information-centric curating staff and the information-centric algorithms.

I think Medium’s aversion to short fiction is holding Medium back. It should be celebrated instead of hidden away. As a reader I want to be both informed AND entertained! Bring some balance to Medium. Stop making it strictly an information/self-help platform and let entertainment/fiction shine forth. Celebrate it instead of hiding it from readers. I think this will help Medium get even better and attract even more paying subscribers. Just a suggestion.
