Dheeraj, I did some counting this morning. I opened up my Medium home page feed and went through the top 40 posts in the feed. To my amazement I found that 35 of those 40 top posts appeared in my feed because they were recommended by YOU! 35 of the top 40 posts! You have utterly taken over my home page feed. You are in control of it!

Of course, I let you do that by following you.

I am not complaining about you or what you recommend. You manage to find some good articles and I have enjoyed some of what you recommend. What I am trying to highlight is the obvious fact that Medium’s follow/recommend system is profoundly broken.

When one person recommends as profusely as you do they can thoroughly take over the feeds of the people who follow them. Almost everything else disappears from the feed to make room for the most profuse recommender.

Where are all the posts from the many tags that I follow? Where are all the posts from the people I follow? Well, there were some but only 5! When I click on the profiles of the people I follow or the subject tags I follow I discover that there have been many, many posts made but they don’t appear (except a tiny handful) in my feed because my feed is choked full of Dheeraj’s recommendations.

To reiterate, I’m not complaining about Dheeraj’s recommendations but rather the broken system that allows Dheeraj’s recommendations to squeeze out almost everything else out of my feed.

Goodness, gracious, I hope someone at Medium is working on this very annoying problem. Or do they even see it as a problem?

While I’m speaking about @Medium let me ask one more thing….. Why can’t the feed be updated more often? I come in at 8 in the morning and go through the feed then I come back at 5 in the afternoon and the feed is exactly the same as it was at 8 in the morning except for maybe 1 or 2 or 3 new posts. I come at 9:30 in the evening and it is the same as it was at 5 except for maybe 1 or 2 or 3 new posts. The next morning it’s the same thing. Why can’t the feed be more like a stream instead of something that is updated only a couple of times a day?
