Can Laughter Change Math?
Can we see beyond numbers?
“Why are you laughing? Why are you smiling? Looking at these numbers you are showing me, you should be in a state of sheer panic. Why are you not freaking out?”
“Well, I guess this is my new way of freaking out. There comes a point with any situation, no matter how horrible, when you just start laughing. And with that comes a moment of clarity. I guess that’s what I’m hoping will happen.”
“Seriously? You’re trying to induce that moment of clarity by laughing? Or did you already experience the clarity and the laughing is the result?”
“Well, I’ve only experienced partial clarity, hoping to expand the clarity through heightened levity.”
“You’re not very good at math are you?”
“Not really. That’s why I brought the numbers to you.”
“Well, from what I’m seeing you should be crying. You know, crying can produce clarity, too.”
“I know but that stopped working so I’ve decided to just keep laughing until everything changes.”
“Well your belly and ribs are going to be hurting by then.”
“Are you kidding? They hurt already. But I’m not giving up. I’m going to keep laughing until reality changes. And if — I mean when — that happens I’m gonna write a book telling the world how it’s done.”
“Now I’m laughing. Let me know when that book gets published.”
